This Matcha Bowl is one of the first pieces I've created using this carving technique.
The bowl begins on the pottery wheel before being carefully carved by hand to create its distinctive kurinuki-inspired form. The combination of wheel throwing and carving creates a piece that feels both refined and raw, balancing smooth curves with heavily textured surfaces.
A deep glossy black glaze gathers around the rim and flows naturally across the carved edges, highlighting the texture beneath and creating beautiful movement throughout the piece.
For now, this bowl is completely one of a kind.

Why You’ll Love It
What I love most about this bowl is the way the carved surface changes as you turn it in your hands. Every angle reveals different textures, shadows, and details, giving the piece a sculptural quality that feels almost like carved stone.
The dark glossy glaze contrasts beautifully with the textured clay beneath, creating depth and highlighting the unique contours of the bowl.
Despite its expressive exterior, the interior remains smooth and comfortable to use. The rounded shape provides plenty of room for whisking matcha into a rich, creamy foam while feeling balanced and substantial in the hands.
This is the kind of piece that naturally draws attention on a shelf, yet feels even better when used every day.
