Sushi Plate – Inyo #02

This rectangular plate begins as a tall cylinder on the wheel. While the clay is still firm, I cut it open on one side and ease it flat, leaving soft curves that hint at its round beginnings. After glazing with tenmoku and clear glaze and a final high-temperature firing, each plate emerges with subtle variations that make it completely unique.

About the Inyo Series

The Inyo Series began as a quiet experiment. I was curious what might happen if I dipped each piece in two different glazes — one dark and rich tenmoku, the other soft and transparent clear glaze. The result reminded me of a landscape: layered, spontaneous, and full of contrast.

“Inyo” is the Japanese word for yin and yang — and this series reflects that idea in both form and finish. Where the two glazes meet, something new and unexpected always appears. Some flows are bold, others gentle — each piece completely unique.

Every item in the series is made slowly and intuitively by hand. The variation in the glazes gives them a sense of quiet movement, and a presence that goes beyond function.
